Red Sox's Jahmai Jones: Enters game as pinch hitter
Jones (hip) entered Wednesday's game as a pinch hitter and finished as the designated hitter. He walked in his lone plate appearance in a 7-6 extra-inning loss to the Diamondbacks.
Jones, who battled left hip tightness the previous two days, pinch hit for Mickey Gasper against a left-hander in the eighth inning. The former has been remarkably productive in a part-time role since joining Boston, going 11-for-23 with four doubles, two home runs, six RBI, three steals and eight runs scored over 15 contests.

Red Sox's Mickey Gasper: Homers in third straight
Gasper served as the designated hitter and went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run in Wednesday's 7-6 extra-inning loss to Arizona.
Gasper gave the Red Sox a jolt in the bottom of the sixth inning, when he launched a three-run homer that tied the game after the Diamondbacks extended their lead in the top of the frame. It was the third straight game with a homer for Gasper, who had gone deep just twice over 92 career games in the majors prior to his call-up this week. The switch hitter has served as the DH in three consecutive contests, all against right-handers. He was eventually pinch hit for against a left-hander in the eighth.

Red Sox's Payton Tolle: Strikes out six in no-decision
Tolle did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Diamondbacks, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out six.
Tolle was sharp early, as he held Arizona scoreless through his first four innings. However, things would unravel for the left-hander in the fifth, when the D-Backs rallied for three runs on three doubles. It's the first time in five starts that Tolle's allowed more than two runs -- he posted a 1.78 ERA across 25.1 innings in his previous four outings. Overall, Tolle is 8-6 with a 3.08 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 134:33 K:BB across 21 starts (120 innings) this season. He's currently lined up to face the Marlins on the road his next time out.

Red Sox's Jahmai Jones: Day-to-day with hip injury
Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said that Jones was scratched from the lineup ahead of Monday's 11-1 win over the Diamondbacks due to left hip tightness, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
Jones had been penciled in as the Red Sox's designated hitter and leadoff hitter for the series opener, but he was removed from the lineup since his hip was preventing him from turning his swing "fully loose," according to Tracy. The skipper downplayed any major concern about the injury, and the Red Sox are expecting Jones to be available the next time they face a left-handed starting pitcher.

Red Sox's Adley Rutschman: Day off Wednesday
Rutschman is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Diamondbacks.
After making five straight starts, Rustchman will get a breather during Wednesday's afternoon contest. Connor Wong will do the catching and will bat ninth as the Red Sox attempt to complete the series sweep.

Red Sox's Justin Gonzales: Debuts at Double-A
Gonzales started in right field, batted leadoff and went 2-for-5 with a run scored for Double-A Portland on Tuesday.
The 19-year-old Gonzales appeared in his first game at the Double-A level. He was promoted to the Sea Dogs on Monday after mashing at High-A Greenville, where he posted a .271/.391/.463 slash line with 17 home runs, 12 doubles, 11 steals and 59 RBI over 89 games. He entered the organization as a first baseman and looks like one, but Gonzalez has transitioned to outfield the last two seasons, getting playing time at all three spots.

Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Encouraging start to rehab
Anthony (finger) served as the designated hitter and went 2-for-2 with two walks, a home run and two RBI for Double-A Portland on Tuesday.
Anthony kicked off his rehab assignment in style, rocking a two-run home run in the fifth inning that left Delta Dental Park in Portland. Given the length of his absence, Anthony is expected to play a significant number of games while on rehab. The Red Sox could draw out the assignment until September's roster expansion, but if Anthony shows he's ready before then, it would behoove a team positioning itself for the postseason to bring him to Boston as soon as possible.

Red Sox's Mickey Gasper: Goes deep again in win
Gasper went 2-for-2 with a home run, two walks and two RBI in Tuesday's 9-4 win over the Diamondbacks.
Gasper was perfect at the plate, and the highlight was a solo blast in the sixth inning. The 30-year-old has now homered in back-to-back games since rejoining the Red Sox on Monday. He's slashed .254/.323/.368 with eight extra-base hits, 11 RBI and 13 runs scored across 128 major-league plate appearances and is earning himself a chance to stick around during his second stint with the big club this season.

Red Sox's Adley Rutschman: Goes deep in win
Rutschman went 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk and three RBI in Tuesday's 9-4 win over the Diamondbacks.
Rutschman opened the scoring with a two-run single in the first inning before launching a solo shot in the third. It was the 28-year-old's first homer in seven games with his new club, and he's now posted back-to-back multi-hit efforts after going 1-for-17 over his previous five contests. On the year, he's slashing .245/.332/.425 with nine long balls, 51 RBI and 32 runs scored across 316 plate appearances with the Red Sox and Orioles.

Red Sox's Ranger Suarez: Increases workload again in win
Suarez (5-3) earned the win against the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 5.1 innings.
Suarez allowed a grand slam in the third inning but was otherwise strong, throwing 63 of 93 total pitches for strikes while working into the sixth for the first time since returning from the injured list July 26. The southpaw has increased his pitch count in each of his five outings during that stretch and appears to be fully stretched out at this point. He'll carry a 3.41 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 113:33 K:BB across 113.1 innings this season into a road matchup with the Marlins next week.

Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Set to reclaim leadoff role upon return
Manager Chad Tracy said Monday that Anthony (finger) is expected to serve as the Red Sox's everyday leadoff hitter while splitting time between left field and designated hitter upon returning from the 60-day injured list, Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
The Red Sox are soon expected to get two of their lineup regulars back from long-term injuries, as Anthony and shortstop Trevor Story (sports hernia) are both in the midst of rehab assignments. Story could be activated from the IL as soon as Friday, while Anthony -- who will begin his assignment Tuesday at Double-A Portland -- may need a little more time on the farm to stockpile at-bats before making his return to Boston. Before landing on the IL on May 7 due to a sprained ligament on the base of his right ring finger, Anthony had gotten off to a slow start to the season with a .675 OPS, but even that level of production would still represent a slight upgrade from what the Red Sox have received from their replacement options atop the batting order. Abraham notes that since Anthony went on the IL, Red Sox leadoff hitters have generated a .215/.292/.367 slash line.

Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Out until tail end of season
Interim manager Chad Tracy revealed Tuesday that Yoshida has a "significant" left hamstring injury that will keep him out until close to the end of the season, at minimum, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Yoshida was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday due to the hamstring strain, with the hope he could return by early September. However, it now appears Yoshida could potentially miss the rest of the regular season. Yoshida and the team are set to get multiple opinions and imaging done in coming days to evaluate the best course of action.

Red Sox's Tanner Houck: Faces hitters Tuesday
Houck (elbow) tossed a live bullpen session to batters Tuesday, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
It's a significant step in the right direction for Houck, as Tuesday was the first time he faced hitters since undergoing Tommy John Surgery in August 2025. Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy told reporters that Houck is "in the picture" for a major-league role toward the tail end of the regular season, if the right-hander is cleared to return from the 60-day IL.

Rutschman went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Monday's 11-1 win over Arizona.

Red Sox's Ceddanne Rafaela: Cracks three doubles vs. Arizona
Rafaela went 3-for-5 with three doubles, one RBI and two runs scored during Bostons' 11-1 win over Arizona on Monday.
Rafaela set a career high with three doubles in Monday's blowout win, and it was high ninth three-hit game of the year. The 25-year-old center fielder has stepped up his production this year, which earned him a spot on the American League roster for the All-Star Game. Rafaela is slashing .288/.325/.470 with 16 steals (in 23 attempts), 16 home runs and 64 RBI over 503 plate appearances this season, and his 32 doubles are tied with Alec Burleson for most in the majors.
