Top Diamondbacks News

  • Diamondbacks' Ildemaro Vargas: Extends streak with four-hit game

Vargas went 4-for-4 with a walk and an RBI in Friday's 6-5 loss to the Cubs.

While Arizona wasn't able to take advantage of having Vargas on base every time through the order, it was still another impressive effort from the 34-year-old switch hitter. Vargas has hit safely in 24 straight games to begin the campaign, tied for the second-longest streak within a single season in Diamondbacks history with Tony Womack in 2000, and his overall streak stands at 27 games dating back to the end of last year -- putting him within striking distance of matching or exceeding Luis Gonzalez's club-record streak of 30 games, set in 1999. Vargas is slashing a stunning .404/.429/.702 so far in 2026 with 14 extra-base hits, including six homers to already tie his career high, along with 19 runs and 21 RBI.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Mauled by Cubs

Gallen (1-2) took the loss Friday, coughing up six runs on seven hits and three walks over 3.2 innings as the Diamondbacks were downed 6-5 by the Cubs. He struck out three.

Chicago ambushed the right-hander for three runs in the first inning, and another three-spot in the fourth chased Gallen from the game after 95 pitches (57 strikes). The performance ended a stretch of five straight starts in which he'd given up three runs or fewer, and Gallen will take a 4.45 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 20:10 K:BB through 32.1 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come at home next week against the Pirates.

  • Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Not in Friday's lineup

Gurriel is absent from the lineup for Friday's contest against the Cubs.

Gurriel has started to heat up with multiple hits in three of his last four games, but he'll get some rest as the Diamondbacks open a series at Wrigley Field. Jorge Barrosa will cover left field and bat ninth.

  • Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Taking seat Friday

Marte is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Cubs.

It's a rare day off for Marte, who had made 12 consecutive starts. Ildemaro Vargas will cover second base Friday, while Jose Fernandez will play first base and Adrian Del Castillo will slot in at designated hitter.

  • Diamondbacks' Philip Abner: Optioned to Triple-A

The Diamondbacks optioned Abner to Triple-A Reno on Friday.

Abner yielded two runs over 2.1 innings in Thursday's blowout loss to the Brewers in what was his lone outing with the big club after being recalled earlier this week. He's being sent out in favor of a fresh bullpen arm.

  • Diamondbacks' Aramis Garcia: Removed from 40-man roster

The Diamondbacks designated Garcia for assignment Friday.

He was serving as a third catcher, but with Gabriel Moreno (oblique) back from the injured list, Garcia is no longer needed. He'll likely clear waivers and stick around in the organization.

  • Diamondbacks' Brandyn Garcia: Summoned from minors

The Diamondbacks recalled Garcia from Triple-A Reno on Friday.

Garcia earned the promotion after holding a 2.19 ERA and 18:10 K:BB over 12.1 innings with Reno. The hard-throwing southpaw will likely be used in low-leverage relief situations initially.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Returns from injured list

The Diamondbacks activated Moreno (oblique) from the 10-day injured list Friday.

Moreno is ready to go after missing the past two-plus weeks with a left oblique strain. Since his absence was relatively brief, the Diamondbacks felt a rehab assignment wasn't necessary. He'll return to being the team's primary catcher.

  • Diamondbacks' Michael Soroka: Shelled in short start

Soroka (4-1) took the loss Thursday against the Brewers, allowing eight runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out two over three innings.

Soroka was hit hard from the start, allowing consistent contact and struggling to put hitters away. He threw 79 pitches and faced 21 batters, retiring just nine before being pulled in the fourth after surrendering four straight singles without recording an out. The outing was a stark contrast to Soroka's strong start to the season, as he had previously gone at least five innings in every outing, including two double-digit strikeout performances. The right-hander's ERA jumped from 2.60 to 4.70, and he now holds a 1.43 WHIP and 36:9 K:BB across 30.2 innings. Soroka is tentatively scheduled to face Pittsburgh in his next start.

  • Diamondbacks' Jose Fernandez: Not in Arizona lineup

Fernandez is not in the lineup for Thursday's game in Milwaukee.

Fernandez had started the last four contests and 17 of the past 18 tilts, but he'll begin Thursday's festivities on the bench. Adrian Del Castillo will occupy the designated-hitter slot in Thursday's rubber match.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Cleared to start Friday

The Diamondbacks list Gallen (shoulder) as their starting pitcher for Friday's game against the Cubs, Jack Sommers of SI.com reports.

Gallen had to be removed from his last outing after he was struck in the right shoulder by a comebacker, but he threw a bullpen session Wednesday without issue and will not have to miss a turn in the rotation. The veteran right-hander should be ready for a normal workload at Wrigley Field.

  • Diamondbacks' Ildemaro Vargas: Keeps rolling

Vargas went 2-for-5 with a run scored in Wednesday's 6-2 win over the Brewers.

Vargas wasted little time extending his season-opening hit streak to 22 games when he singled in his first plate appearance. Going back to 2025, the utility infielder has hit safely in 25 consecutive games. Vargas, who has become the team's primary first baseman, doesn't have any real competition for playing time at the moment with both Carlos Santana (thigh) and Pavin Smith (elbow) on the injured list.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Rejoins starting nine

Perdomo went 0-for-2 with three walks in Wednesday's 6-2 win over Milwaukee.

Perdomo returned to action after missing two games due to a left ankle sprain and resumed his role as the leadoff batter against right-handers. The shortstop had a rough start to the season but has looked more like the 2025 version of himself lately -- Perdomo is 13-for-32 (.406) with five extra-base hits, two steals, six walks and four runs over the last nine contests.

  • Diamondbacks' Adrian Del Castillo: Hits second homer

Del Castillo went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 6-2 win over the Brewers.

Del Castillo's blast got the Diamondbacks on the board in the fourth inning. The catcher had gone 0-for-7 with two walks and three strikeouts over his last three games. Overall, he's batting just .222 with a .652 OPS, two homers, 11 RBI, six runs scored, three doubles and no stolen bases over 57 plate appearances. He's shared the catching duties with James McCann lately, but Del Castillo is likely to see a drop in playing time once Gabriel Moreno (oblique) returns, which is expected to happen during Arizona's series versus the Cubs this weekend.

  • Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Pops fifth homer

Marte went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 6-2 win over the Brewers.

Marte has gone 13-for-47 (.277) over his last 11 contests, logging four multi-hit efforts in that span. The second baseman has just two extra-base hits in that sample, but it's encouraging to see him make more steady contact after a slow start to the campaign. Marte is batting .239 with a .693 OPS, five homers, 11 RBI, 17 runs scored, three doubles and no stolen bases over 28 contests. It's worth monitoring to see if his power shows up more consistently as the season progresses, as he's hit at least 25 homers in three straight seasons.
