The Diamondbacks reinstated Burnes (elbow) from the 60-day injured list to start Tuesday's game against the Royals.
The 31-year-old is ready to step on a big-league mound for the first time since June 1, 2025, when he suffered the elbow injury that forced him to undergo Tommy John surgery. Burnes made just one rehab appearance in the minors but also pitched in a bridge game last week, during which he built up to 50 pitches. The right-hander seems likely to be limited to about 60 pitches in his first start back from the IL, with the Diamondbacks likely to be monitoring his workload closely down the stretch.

Burnes will be making his season debut for the Diamondbacks, after his return from June 2025 Tommy John surgery was delayed when he sustained a teres major strain in June. The right-hander threw 17 pitches over two scoreless innings in his lone rehab start and then appeared in a bridge game last week to get further stretched out. Per MLB.com, Burnes tossed three innings and 43 pitches in the bridge game and then threw seven more pitches out of the bullpen, so it's difficult to imagine him pushing far past 60 pitches duringTuesday's start.

Burnes suffered a setback this June in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, but he's progressed well since resuming a throwing program in July. The right-hander tossed two perfect innings on 17 pitches in his first rehab start with Triple-A Reno on Aug. 29, and after throwing a bullpen Tuesday he was slated to work a bridge game Thursday to further build his stamina. It's unclear how many pitches Burnes threw Thursday, but he would be quite limited from a workload perspective if he were activated to face the Royals. Once Burnes is officially tapped to return, he'll be making his first appearance in the big leagues in more than 15 months.

Burnes needed just 17 pitches (10 strikes) to record six outs in the minor-league outing, his first game action at any level since he underwent Tommy John surgery last June. The Diamondbacks plan to evaluate Burnes following Saturday's outing and could opt to bring him back from the 60-day injured list for his next appearance, even though he's not yet fully stretched out for a traditional starter's workload and would likely be limited to a relief role in that scenario.
