White Sox's David Sandlin: Falters late in no-decision

Sandlin did not factor into the decision in Friday's 11-8 loss to the Tigers, allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk with four strikeouts over four innings.
Sandlin was spotted an early lead but was unable to record an out in a three-run fifth inning. The 25-year-old threw 48 of 74 pitches for strikes with nine whiffs in just his second start since the All-Star break. He owns a bloated 6.29 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 33:13 K:BB across 34.1 major-league innings this season and lines up to make one more start on the road against Kansas City next week.

After being recalled from Triple-A Charlotte over the weekend, Sandlin made what was believed to be a spot start in the White Sox's 3-1 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday, when he struck out five while allowing three unearned runs on two hits and no walks over 5.2 innings. However, with manager Will Venable announcing Thursday that Luis Castillo has been moved to the bullpen, Sandlin will have a chance to stick around in the rotation for the rest of the regular season and potentially into the postseason. Over six total appearances (four starts) with the big club, Sandlin has delivered a 5.64 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 29:12 K:BB across 30.1 frames.

Sandlin got off to an excellent start Sunday, as he held St. Louis to just one hit through his first five scoreless innings. Sandlin was otherworldly in his MLB debut against the Twins on May 27, giving up just one hit over six innings. Minnesota got the better of him in the rematch, however, pounding the right-hander for eight hits -- the biggest of which was a grand slam by Tristan Gray in the fifth inning. Sandlin also hurt himself by issuing four walks, with three of those runners coming around to score. While he pitched into the fifth inning, he didn't get any outs in his final frame, handing out two free passes around a single before his departure. Sandlin could get more starts while Noah Schultz (knee) remains on the IL, and if he sticks in the rotation, Sandlin is lined up for a tough matchup in Philadelphia his next time out.

As expected, Sandlin will receive a second straight turn through the Chicago rotation after an impressive showing in his MLB debut last Wednesday versus the same Twins squad at Rate Field. The 25-year-old righty picked up a win and struck out four batters while issuing no walks and limiting Minnesota to just one hit (a solo home run) over six innings. Sandlin was pulled from the game after throwing just 61 pitches, and considering that he didn't cover more than four frames in any of his six minor-league appearances prior to his call-up, the White Sox seem likely to manage his workload carefully in future starts.
