Red Sox's Ranger Suarez: Won't be activated Wednesday
Interim manager Chad Tracy said that Suarez (groin/illness) won't be activated from the injured list to start the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Orioles, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
Suarez isn't dealing with any setbacks related to the left groin strain that sent him to the shelf July 9; instead, it's an illness that surfaced earlier this week that will keep him from taking the hill Wednesday. Eduardo Rivera will draw the start for the nightcap as the Red Sox go for their 16th straight win, but Suarez shouldn't have to wait long to return from the injured list. The Red Sox could insert Suarez into the rotation at some point during their home series versus the Blue Jays this weekend or in Monday's series opener versus the Athletics.

Red Sox's Ranger Suarez: Could pitch Wednesday

The Red Sox placed Suarez on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a left groin strain.
Suarez exited his previous start Sunday against the Angels due to what the Red Sox referred to as left adductor tightness, but a subsequent MRI revealed a groin strain, which will keep the southpaw out through the All-Star break and prevent him from pitching in the Midsummer Classic. Suarez earned his second All-Star nod after compiling a 3.15 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 97:26 K:BB across 91.1 innings in his first season with Boston. His turn in the rotation had been set to come up Saturday at Citi Field, and the Red Sox are now likely to call up Brayan Bello from Triple-A Worcester to either start or pitch in bulk relief in that game against the Mets.

Suarez appeared to get hurt after throwing a pitch that was knocked by Jo Adell for an infield single. The left-handed hurler took a small hop toward the batted ball and seemed to land awkwardly. Suarez subsequently threw a warm-up pitch, and he then came out of the contest. The recently anointed All-Star tossed 2.2 innings in the outing, allowing three runs on six hits and no walks while striking out five batters. Suarez (4-3) earned the win Monday, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk over six innings in a 6-3 win over the Nationals. He struck out eight.
Suarez surrendered a leadoff homer to James Wood but settled in over the middle innings before allowing a two-run double to CJ Abrams in the sixth frame, though the southpaw still was credited with a quality start and the win.
