Bello returned to the rotation for his first start since June 4 and delivered five shutout frames. Bello had largely thrived as a reliever coming into the contest, but it was a different story Saturday, as he was tagged for three runs during his first full inning of work. Bello (5-6) was credited with the win against Arizona on Monday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out three across 4.2 innings.
Alec Gamboa served as Boston's opener, recording the first four outs before turning the keys over to Bello in the second inning. Bello allowed two singles in that same frame but escaped without issuing a run, and he kept the Diamondbacks off the board until the fifth inning on a Geraldo Perdomo sacrifice fly. Bello finished his outing having generated six whiffs and six groundouts while tossing 50 of his 76 pitches for strikes. Across 11 bullpen outings, he sports an 0.85 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 45:7 K:BB over 52.2 innings. Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Slated to have big role Monday
Bello is expected to pitch in bulk relief behind left-hander Alec Gamboa in Monday's game against the Diamondbacks at Fenway Park, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Gamboa has served as a swingman at Triple-A Worcester for a good chunk of the season and is capable of offering more length than the typical opener, but he might be capped at around one or two frames Monday since he'll be pitching on two days' rest after tossing three innings and 36 pitches in Friday's 8-4 loss to the Pirates. As a result, look for Bello -- who last pitched Aug. 9 -- to be called upon to provide length behind Gamboa. Bello has been hit hard over his eight starts this season, but he's been lights out in 10 relief appearances, pitching to an 0.75 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 42:6 K:BB across 48 innings. The 27-year-old righty could be a worthy streaming option Monday for fantasy managers looking to make up ground in the wins category.

Bello has been lights out since his return from the minors, although it's been as a reliever. In three relief appearances, Bello has allowed one run over 13.2 innings while throwing at least four innings in each outing. He's been so effective that the Red Sox are considering starting him again, per Doug Padilla of MLB.com. "We'll talk about that," interim manager Chad Tracy said. "You got, after the off day [Monday], the 16 games in a row. So once we get past that off day and the deadline, you start looking at where we can get creative with things." As a starter in 2026, Bello has a 10.35 ERA and 2.21 WHIP over eight starts (35.2 innings).

Bello shined in bulk relief for the second time since being recalled from Triple-A Worcester earlier this month. Bello struck out five and allowed one earned run on two hits and no walks across 4.1 innings of long relief Sunday in the Red Sox's 3-2 extra-inning win over the Mets.
Boston recalled Bello from Triple-A Worcester prior to their final game of the first half, after the right-hander submitted a 4.34 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 22:4 K:BB in 18.2 innings across his four starts in the minors. Though Bello had previously been used as a traditional starter or bulk reliever in his prior 13 outings with Boston this season, he was deployed as part of a piggyback arrangement with Payton Tolle, whom interim manager Chad Tracy indicated prior to the game would be deliberately limited as a means of workload management. After Tolle covered the first 3.2 innings, Bello entered midway through the fourth and was able to keep the Red Sox competitive before the Boston offense finally broke through with two runs in the ninth inning to send the game to extras. Boston will have an opening in its rotation until either Ranger Suarez (groin) or Connelly Early (elbow) return from the injured list, and Bello or Eduardo Rivera -- who made an abbreviated start Saturday -- would appear to be the top candidates to fill the void.

Through 61 innings this season, Bello has an ugly 6.34 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 44:24 K:BB, with a lot of those troubles coming during the first inning, when he's surrendered 15 earned runs. He'll try to iron things out in the minors with the hope of rejoining the Red Sox later this summer. Jake Bennett is believed to be a strong candidate to fill Bello's spot in the rotation, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com.
